The ROBINSON A257-2 is the standard OEM gearbox oil used in Robinson helicopter main and tail rotor gearboxes, particularly in earlier and many still-operational R22 and R44 aircraft configurations.

It is a specialized aviation gear lubricant formulated to operate under high load, high RPM, and continuous vibration conditions found in helicopter transmission systems. The oil provides lubrication for spiral bevel and helical gear meshes inside the main rotor gearbox (MRG) and tail rotor gearbox (TRG), ensuring heat control, wear protection, and stable film strength under cyclic loads.

According to Robinson maintenance documentation, A257-2 is used as the primary gearbox oil for older gearbox configurations, while later aircraft and upgraded gearboxes may use A257-22 synthetic oil. Mixing oil types is not permitted unless specifically allowed under service instructions.

In service, both main and tail gearboxes are filled to a sight-gauge level and require periodic inspection. Oil must be maintained within limits, and any leakage or low level requires immediate replenishment using the specified A257-2 fluid.
